Coastal Scents Brush Set

Recently I bought the Coastal Scents 88 Warm Palette and one of their brush sets, and I have been very satisfied with the quality of both items. I’ll review the 88 Warm Palette in my next post, and try do some swatches if I can get good quality pics. I also bought an empty quad palette for Stela, which the MAC eyeshadow pans fit perfectly in. For only $4.50, it comes in the form of a mirror compact and the palette already had magnets on the bottom so that you don’t have to glue your own magnets to your pans after you depot them. I’m not totally sure how that would work with MAC’s refill pans, which are already magnetic. Stela will probably update us on that.

The brush set I purchased was the Black Deluxe Reptile Brush Set for $39.95. Coastal Scents is currently running a 15% of all brushes promotion, so if you are interested in buying your own after this review, then you can buy them at coastalscents.com.

Let me start off by saying that the black snake skin bag that my brushes came with was VERY nice and chic looking. It smelled a little weird because of the leather, but I assume that smell will go away.

The Black Deluxe Reptile Brush Set includes fifteen brushes, each of them with a nice looking red handle. The brushes in this set are:

  • Large powder brush – 7 3/4″
  • Smaller powder brush – 7.5″
  • Angle Blush – 7.5″
  • Foundation Taklon – 7 1/4″
  • Doe Foot Shadow – 7″
  • Large Shadow/blender – 7 1/4″
  • Medium Oval Shadow – 7″
  • White Taklon Flat Detail – 7 1/4 “
  • Brow / Lash Comb – 7.5″
  • Synthetic Lip Brush – 7.5″
  • Synthetic Medium Detail Eyes – 7″
  • Taklon Angle Liner – 7″
  • Small Oval Eye Detail -7″
  • Lash Fan Applicater – 7″
  • Round Crease Brush – 7″

I’ll take pictures of each brush and post them here later. The brushes are surprisingly soft; so soft that they just tickle me! My favorite in this set would have to be the Taklon Angle Liner. It’s a small angled brush used to line your eyelids with eyeshadow or creme liner. I was previously using my MAC knockoff angled brush, which was very stiff and scratchy on my skin. Compared to my cheap imitation brush, the Coastal Scents Taklon Angle Liner Brush is very soft and the liner comes on very smoothly.

The bigger brushes, like the Large Powder brush, were not AS soft as the rest in this set, but they were pretty decent. They didnt shed during application, and I love the Angle Blush brush for getting my cheeks rosy.

The only brush I wasn’t that excited about was the Lash Fan Applicator, which I assume is supposed to compete with my MAC 205 Mascara Fan brush. It doesn’t even compare… it’s a lot thicker than my 205 brush, and not serrated. I will do a proper comparison later.

I’d say that the Coastal Scents brushes are a great and affordable alternative to MAC brushes if you don’t want to spend as much money. The individual brushes sell for anywhere between $2 to $10 and there are a variety of different colored handles. For a brush set with fifteen brushes $39.95 is a very reasonable price, especially since some individual MAC brushes alone are even more expensive than the Coastal Scents sets.

On a side note, I am going to be posting a tutorial on how to curl your hair using a flat iron later today. In fact, the video is currently being exported as I type this, but it will take a few hours to finish. The quality of the picture is not that great, because I used my iSight on my MacBook, but I figured you wouldn’t have to see that much detail anyway. Once I get a new SD card for my camera I will be able to do some high quality tutorials. In the meantime, stay tuned!
