6 Hair Myths Revealed

Throughout my whole life I have heard tips and tricks about what’s best for your hair, but is it really true? My friends and family aren’t exactly hair experts, so I wanted to uncover the truth about these myths that are floating around. Experts, Elise Olden MD and Valerie Callender MD spills all about our hair rumors.

“Frequent trims makes your hair grow faster”

I’ve heard this myth from my friends A LOT. Think about it, if you’re wanting to grow out your hair, why would you want to cut it so often? It’d only be cutting it shorter every time. Hair grows about half-inch per month whether it’s cut or not. This doesn’t mean you should stop cutting your hair because you need an occasional trim to take care of the pesky split ends.

“If you pluck out one gray hair, more will sprout in its place”

No one likes to see gray hairs, but just because you pull out one gray hair doesn’t mean it’s an epidemic and it’s going to spread to the rest of your scalp. This is false. It has been proven that pulling out one gray hair will not cause many more to sprout, but it can lead to infections and scarring at the root.

“You can mend split ends with the right products”

It’s sad to say that there aren’t any magical products that will mend our split ends. However, there are products that can make them appear temporarily smoother, but the only way to get rid of split ends is to chop them.

“You have to constantly switch up your products because your hair will get used to it”

I always believed that my hair would get too used to the chemicals if I used one shampoo too long, but it’s not true. I bet you’re as surprised as I am. Truth is, hair cannot tell a difference between brands or build up tolerance to any product. If you find that your shampoo/conditioner isn’t working its magic, then try swamping your hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove any excess build-up.

“Natural shampoos are the only kind that are gentle enough for hair”

This is definitely not true. The hair industry has excelled and companies have noticed that consumers want a more hair friendly shampoo. Many shampoos in the market today are sulfate free, contain natural oils, and are proven to be gentle enough not to weaken the hair.

“If your hair is falling out, you should be concerned”

No need to panic! Hair falling out is 100% normal. Did you know that 100 hair sheds a day? Your hair is constantly going through a hair cycle, and the hair lost will be replaced. If you find that you are losing more hair than normal, then visit your dermatologist for further help.
