Kevin Murphy Shimmer Bug Hair Shadow

Every spring/summer, I struggle with the decision of whether or not I should lighten my hair – I always love the idea, but can’t deal with the extra maintenance and the damage it might do to my hair. Enter, Kevin Murphy’s Shimmer Bug Hair Shadow, which is basically like hair chalk but is meant to add a subtle shimmery lightening affect to your hair. I was pretty curious about this product because I love the idea of having the freedom to lighten my hair for a day at the beach or a night out, and then being able to rinse it out at the end of the night.

Shimmer Bug comes in a dome-shaped container, and when you uncap it, it reveals a solid pan of eyeshadow-like shimmery pigment. You apply it directly to your hair by rubbing it in until you have the desired effect. I would seriously recommend placing a towel over your shoulders to avoid getting the shadow all over your clothes. I also found that placing your hair between a hand towel and the Shimmer Bug when applying allowed me to get more product into my hair.

Below is a picture with the product applied to one side of my hair. You can see that it is visibly lighter than the left side.

I was able to give myself a sort of ombre look within minutes, and it lasted about 3 hours before I noticed any fading – however, I was lying in bed for some time, so the contact to my hair might have made it fade faster than if I’d just left my hair alone. One downside of this product is that it can make your hair look a bit dry, so after the shimmer set into my hair, I applied Kevin Murphy Shimmer Shine Spray to the ends.

Here’s a couple selfies I took with my phone – the lighting is darker but you can still see the lightening effect that Kevin Murphy Shimmer Bug Hair Shadow gives to my naturally dark hair.

That is so cool! I got some copper shimmer powder from another brand, and you can't see it in my dark hair. :(
