While at The Makeup Show Blogger Preview Event in New York City last Friday, I definitely noticed that bold lips are hot-hot-HOT this year. So, I was glad when inside the ridiculously large gift bag I received at the event was Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in one of their new matte shades: Fuchsia Flash Matte. Putting aside that fuchsia happens to be one of my favorite colors, I was just ecstatic to be getting anything from Smashbox, to be honest. If you’ve seen the looks I typically sport, you’ll notice that I tend to play up my eyes and wear a neutral or overall subtle lip, but I really really wanted to try to go out of my comfort zone and wear that trendy bold lip for the trade show the next day.
So, Saturday morning I actually had to meet up with my sister and her family since they were flying in on a redeye. They graciously let me stay in their hotel room that night so that I wouldn’t have to pay an extra night for my own room. So I dragged my suitcase – which by the way was twice as heavy after stuffing in there all the free junk from my goody bag – to their hotel. I put my Fuchsia Flash lipstick on when I got to their hotel at around 9am, quickly changed my clothes, and made my way to the Metropolitan Pavilion, where The Makeup Show was being held.
Unfortunately, I didn’t take any pictures of myself on Saturday, but here’s one I took tonight for the purposes of this post:
Smashbox Be Legendary Lipstick in Fuchsia Flash
By 2pm I quickly checked myself in my compact mirror and was surprised to see that even after drinking an entire vente frappuccino and eating a delicious Raspberry Swirl pound cake from Starbucks, and of course walking around and doing a LOT of talking for five hours, my lipstick hadn’t moved at all. It was still as flawless as it was when I left my sister’s hotel that morning. My jaw actually dropped. Not to mention that this lipstick was REALLY pigmented. I mean, it was like a neon light and it took me a little getting used to that morning since I don’t usually wear such a bold lip.
Sometime around 3pm, I gingerly made my way to the Kissable Couture booth, which is a brand I wasn’t too familiar with. As it stands, after IMATS last month, The Makeup Show NYC was only the second makeup event I’d ever been to. I’m used to being behind the safety of my computer screen, so this little venture out into the real world makeup community had me a little gun-shy at times. Not to mention, I’m a web developer by trade – and you know us nerdy technical types can be a bit socially inept in certain situations, and by no means am I an actual makeup artist. So yes – I gingerly made my way to the Kissable Couture booth and a lovely MUA there offered to let me sample one of their new lip glosses. Now since it took a considerable amount of effort for me to apply my new Smashbox lipstick that morning, I asked her for a shade that would match my Fuchsia Flash. So she picked out one of their new shades – Mysterious, another fuchsia color – and flawlessly applied it over my existing lipstick.
Let me just say… wow. It was like a match made in heaven. Like I said, I didn’t take any photos of myself that day but here’s a picture of just the lipgloss alone:
Kissable Couture Lip Gloss in Mysterious
What I really love about this lipgloss is, well, the color is just beautiful and it doesn’t feel super heavy on my lips like most glosses do. It also smells AMAZING. What I don’t like is that if I’m wearing it just by itself, it doesn’t have a ton of staying power. However, it is slightly sheerer than Smashbox’s Fuchsia Flash lipstick so if I don’t want to quite so bold, it’s actually great to wear just by itself if I don’t mind having to reapply it every hour and half. But If I really want that wham-pow-POP moment, I can pair the two lip products together and because Smashbox’s lipstick has so MUCH staying power and acts as a base for the Kissable Couture lipgloss, my lips look great all day.
And here’s a picture of the dynamic duo I’ve been sporting almost every day of the week:
I am really excited to start wearing more bold lips, now that I’ve kind of gotten used to the look on me, so you’ll definitely see me checking out more of Smashbox’s Be Legendary lipsticks; and $20 is well worth the color payoff and staying power (even though I actually got it for free). It actually makes the $16 I paid for the Kissable Couture lipgloss worth it because these products go so great together for me.
Here are some swatches; the second one is with flash:
