Skin Care 101 – Keep Your Skin Glowing – Part 1

In one of his best-known songs, John Mayer croons, “Gravity is working against me, and gravity wants to bring me down.”  There’s not much you can do about this powerful natural force in terms of looking young, but there are several tweaks you can make to your everyday routine to keep your complexion taut and lines and wrinkles at bay.  What?  You already have some?  Take heart; these tips and tricks will help reverse the ravages of time.

Become Best Friends with Moisturizers

The moisturizers available on the market today go a long way toward binding water in the top layers of your skin, creating a fresh, dewy look, and help skin to renew itself.  Those with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) dissolve dead cells and clear them away.  Many researchers are convinced that these gentle fruit acids may stimulate collagen production.  Do not fear that serums and creams will trigger or exacerbate acne–moisture and oil are not necessarily the same thing.  All skin types, from oily to very dry, require emollients.  They fill in the spaces between skin cells, smoothing the appearance of rough, uneven skin and preventing early creases caused by gravity, sun exposure, environmental pollutants, and lifestyle habits.  If you are besieged with blemishes, a non-comedogenic moisturizer will ease the irritation caused by anti-acne products.  Dry skin is instantly comforted and enhanced with a creamy product.

Try Josie Maran’s Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 40, which can be bought at Sephora for $32.

Wear Sunscreen Daily

Department and drugstore shelves are replete with sunscreens now, but the sun is a hazard all year long, even if you spend a good bit of your time indoors.  Make a habit of buying skin care products and cosmetics with a high SPF protection factor, but use a separate sunscreen itself daily as part of your routine.  Just how strong are the sun’s UVA and UVB rays?  They render the protection of a white t-shirt equal to an SPF rating of just seven; that number drops to three when it is wet.

Boscia has a new Daily Defense Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 PA+++ for $36

Exfoliate Twice Weekly

Many men age more attractively than women simply because they exfoliate–with a razor blade each day as they shave!  Exfoliation is crucial to remove the upper, dead layer of skin cells on your face.  It deep-cleans and can dislodge blackheads and whiteheads without damaging delicate skin.  Circulation is improved and your complexion is left looking and feeling smoother, finer, cleaner.  There are some exfoliating agents to avoid–those with crushed nut shells.  These can be jagged and cause minute tears in the skin, creating irritation, damage, and places for bacteria to hibernate. Fresh has a great Soy Face Exfoliant for $42 that works with all skin types.

Don’t Tug on Tender Skin

Many of us have a habit of resting our faces in our hands; the less you touch your face, the smoother and more resilient your skin remains.  How to stop the tendency to paw your complexion?  Thirty days is generally how long it takes to begin or end a habit.  The author of the best-selling book The Secret, Rhonda Byrne, says that “changing the habit will take 30 days, re-affirming it further for another 30 days will definitely fix it and you’ll have no problem to continue from there on.”  Be especially careful when working with skin care products or cosmetics in the eye area–this is as fragile as tissue paper.  Always use your ring finger, as it is your weakest and will exert the least pressure.

Gravity seems to be my worst enemy lately. I do the moisturizing thing, but honestly never thought of exfoliating. Thanks for the advice.
